Life in the Day of a Teacher

How did you cope/manage completing the three days of “Life of a Teacher”?

The first day of the Day in the Life of a Teacher was a little difficult as I wasn’t fully prepared for it as the mentor teacher did not have the weekly planner in time which made it difficult for me to teach well or be prepared prior. I also struggled to manage time in the class well, as I needed to understand that classes at the school where not the 45 minutes, I had been used to but were now 30 minutes. However, on the second Day in the Life of a Teacher, I enjoyed it as I was highly prepared and I had thankfully received the weekly planner 4 days prior and I was able to plan my lesson in time as well as prepare myself emotionally, mentally, and physically. This day in the life of a teacher was busy and hectic one as the school had visitors where the learners had limited movement when going to other classes. Therefore, the learner’s timetable was bit mixed up but I was more able to manage my day in the life of a teacher a lot more including being ale to give them extra snack time as I accidentally let them have snack time when they were meant to have library, so I quickly asked the learners to go to snack instead and then they can have extra 5 minutes of snack time. I noticed that I also still struggled with time management toward the day, but we were able to finish the work we did for the day. On the final day, I had asked the mentor teacher if I could do it in a different teacher’s class in which I had the opportunity to do so. I extremely enjoyed this part as the teacher was very informative and gave me a lot of advice on how to become better. The day was also quite eventful, but I managed to control and tech a completely different class, whose mannerism, and attitudes I was not used but I enjoyed it extremely as it was new environment, the only thing I struggled with however was time management as I had to help the learners constantly and explain concepts to learners. Although overall I feel like I developed immensely from the beginning of the Day in the life of a teacher till the end of it as the things I struggled with I was able to develop in them.

How did you feel taking on all the responsibilities of a teacher in Block 1 compared to Block 2?

I felt like I was able to take on more responsibility from Block 1 to Block 2 as I was more confident and comfortable in the classroom. I also constantly insisted to have weekly planners early which was extremely helpful when preparing myself for the lesson. I also felt more prepared in the second block as I had a lot of experience of teaching other classes without a mentor teacher which helped me develop greatly as a teacher.

Which activities did you find most challenging? How did you overcome these challenges?

I found that I had extreme difficulty in managing time when teaching in the classroom, although I was able to overcome these challenges by introducing a time management classroom tool which was effective a lot of the time as learners understood how much time they had to complete a task and what we would need to complete next. By enforcing time management, learners were able to become more productive and efficient it also helped me assist the learners to finish their work properly and effectively.

Analyse your results of your self- evaluation survey where would you rate yourself higher?

I think I have made myself better than what I was when I had completed the Teacher Competencies, I think I have better content and pedagogic knowledge than when I began. I have also developed in teaching the learners particular content as well be able to select what content they will be learning and how.

Justify how you have improved these competencies through this experience.

I have improved these competencies by consistently investigating and researching how I could become better in the content and pedagogic knowledge, like knowing how to teach a specific subject and how to make it better for the learners. I also feel like I’m better in this area as I constantly communicated with other teachers who were extremely helpful.

Look at the exit level outcomes and the final comments of your mentor teacher in your School Assessment Log & Report. Compare this to the initial self -evaluation you had completed at the beginning of your teaching experience.

The School Assessment Log and Report shows that I was able to teach well in a classroom with great pedagogic knowledge and content knowledge, It also helped me realize that I do however need to develop more in taking assessments and how to do these assessments and what else consists of an assessment.

From your reflections, I could notice that your mentor teacher was of no help to you, she did not carry out her duties as a mentor teacher effectively. She failed to guide you, support you, teach you, provide feedback to you, and help you define and reach your goals. You were often left in the deep end and just had to ''figure things out on your own.'' I am deeply sorry for that. However, you managed to turn things around, put your feelings aside and look at the brighter side. You were able to apply your knowledge of what you have learnt as an effective teacher and implement it in your classroom. You were able to use effective time managemen…
